Chuck Taylors were named after a man that promoted himself via the
Converse Barnstorming team, playing as hard as he could to
reach stardom. Though never became an NBA legend, he was a basketball legend amongst the people.
Known as a promoter and coach to the whole sport of basketball, Chuck Taylor earned
his respect from the sports. Single-handed, Taylor put on countless "basketball clinics"
in high school and college gymnasiums across the United States to teach people the
fundamentals of the sport.
Also in 1932, the same year Converse added Chuck Taylor's signature to shoes, the man who
became a father to American basketball, launched a new time. Taylor began making his
'All-American picks', a highly regarded, hand-picked basketball squad. Chuck only picked players
he saw play basketball personally for this team. He found talent in Southeastern
and Southwestern colleges where major city sports never ventured. Taylor proved he had a
great eye for talent through his scouting jobs and all of his basketball picks were showcased in
the popular literary work, "Converse Basketball Yearbook."
Chuck Taylors were named after an smooth talking Basketball player also
had a habit of spreading rumors and myths about himself. According to various
sources, Taylor and his employer often claimed Chuck Taylor was a veteran of the "World Champion"
Original Celtics from New York City. The lying duo also claimed Chuck Taylor was an
"Olympic Champio", playing basketball for the Buffalo Germans. There is no fact in
all these stories.
The myths of Chuck Taylor definitely helped sell Converse All-Star shoes, which most marketers
would assume Taylor & his employer meant to do. In 1957, Chuck put on a basketball clinic at
Westminster College in Fultin, Missouri, striking again with his deceitful ways. According to
many, Chuck Taylor ran off with the college athletic director's wife.
"He had women everywhere" said a retired athletic director at Louisiana State University.
