Hip Hop Interview with Khalil
Hip Hop Interview with Khalil

11 / 10 / 2010       writer: Erica Blackmon @T

The newest R&B sensation to hit the scene is 15-year old heartthrob, Kahlil. This Youtube star has signed with Def Jam records and is responsible for the new catchy hit, “Girlfriend Ringtone”. The young singer is often compared to Chris Brown or a young Trey Songz when it comes to his vocals. This guy is doing big things on the hip hop music scene right now, and I got the chance to find out a little more about Kahlil in a recent interview.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
About how old were you when you realized you wanted to be a singer?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
At the time I was 13.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
So you started out pretty young. Who were your biggest supporters, family or friends?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
My biggest supporter I will have to say my aunt. She was really the one who go me start, basically telling me, ‘You can sing’. She is the one who made me want to start singing.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
And is she the one who encouraged you to put your videos on Youtube?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
Yeah, she’s the one who told me to put the video on Youtube, basically she used to always get me to sing at family reunions and stuff like that. So, I didn’t really like singing at the family reunions and all that in front of my family and my cousins and stuff so basically, she was like, ‘Just put a video up on Youtube and I’ll just show everybody.’ So I posted the video and then a guy named Kevin Wells saw the video. He hit me up on my Youtube account like ‘Yo I got this dude name K.P. I want you to meet in Atlanta. He works at Def Jam and I think that you got a lot of talent and he’ll sign you.’ So I flew out to Atlanta to meet K.P. and after I met K. he flew me to New York and the rest is history.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
About how long did it take for you to get discovered after starting your Youtube?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
It was probably about two or three weeks until Kevin hit me up on the Youtube page.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
Could you tell me a little bit about your first stage performance? Did you ever get stage fright?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
My first stage performance, I was pretty excited. It was a spot that I had done in Philly and I had been preparing for it, and I was also preparing for the Teen Island Fan Fest Tour. So the first one, it was fun. I wasn’t too nervous. I was definitely a little bit nervous but it worked out, so I had a lot of fun.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
Who are some of your biggest influences musically?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
I would have to say my biggest influences would have to be a lot of old school artists like Sam Cook, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, a bunch of old school artists, that’s really what I’m into.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
If you could meet any of those artists, from the past or present, which would you choose?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
I would definitely have to say Stevie Wonder or Donny Hathaway. Those are my two biggest, biggest, influences.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
Are those two your favorite artists?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
Oh yeah, definitely.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
What type of music do you usually listen to?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
I listen to a lot of hip hop, you know what I’m sayin’. A lot of rap, a lot of Lil’ Wayne. But I also listen to a lot of R&B like Chris Brown, Neyo, Trey Songz. I’m a big fan of Nikki Minaj and Drake also. You know.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
Well I also heard that you have some pretty impressive basketball skills. Do you still get to play?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
Yeah, man. I still get out, you what I’m sayin’, go out on the court. I have a lot of fun, me and my homeboys a lot of times go and ball out on the court in the neighborhood and stuff like that, you know what I mean, but I definitely don’t get to ball as much as I used to, but I still keep on the court a lot, I try to keep fit you know.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
What position do you play?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
I play point guard.

Hip Hop Interview Question :

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
If I could meet any famous NBA player I’d definitely have to say it would be Kobe Bryant.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
Is he your favorite player?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
Yeah I been a fan of Kobe for a long, long, long time, he’s my favorite player.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
What is your favorite basketball team?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
Definitely the Lakers. LA all day man.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
Do you have any other hidden talents that we might not know about?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
A lot of people don’t know I got into skateboarding a little minute ago. I was skating for about 2 or 3 years, and then I kind of stopped because of music but I still get on the board every once and a while. I still do a few tricks, you know.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
Where are you actually originally from?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
I am from Sacramento, California.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
Did you grow up there?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
Oh yeah, yeah I grew up in Sac. I was there probably ‘til… I’d say, what…sixth or seventh grade. Then that’s when I moved down to North Carolina with my aunt.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
When is your birthday?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
My birthday is November 22nd. So yeah, its coming up. I’m going to turn sixteen so I can’t wait. I’m probably about to throw a big party.

Hip Hop Interview Question :
How tall are you?

Khalil (r&b singer) response:
Actually I just started growing. I used to always be the short, short, short dude, but now I sprouted up over the summer so I’m like 5’8’’ now. Last year I was way, way, way shorter probably like 5’2”.
