Tabi Bonney also known as “Tabiabuè Bonney” hails from the Lomé, Togo, West Africa and has strong connects
in Washington, DC. As a child living in several countries, Tabi gained cultural influences that show why
his music sets him apart from many hip hop artists today. Not to mention being the son of afro-funk superstar,
Itadi Bonney who is known for being a great composer, arranger, vocalist and guitarist. While we may know Tabi
for songs such as “The Pocket” “Syce It” and “Doin’ It” featuring Raheem DeVaughn off of his album “A Fly Guys Theme”,
this is just a piece of what this young indie artist has brought to the music game. As a student at
Florida A&M University, Tabi Bonney majored in Biology Pre-Med and gained his Masters in Biology/Secondary Education,
but he was still on his grind pursing his goal of becoming a hip hop artist. By doing what other’s won’t or
can’t Tabi set himself apart by taking what was an unusual sound and making it his own.
Early in his career, he worked with rapper Haziqui Ali combining efforts to form the group Organized Rhyme,
which eventually led to performing as the opening act for well-known artist like Outkast, LL Cool J and Camron.
He also worked with Carter to create the underground album “Bonney & Carter”. Tabi Bonney is truly an artist that
has gained strength in the industry by being unique and doing it without the help of a major label. In fact,
when his video appeared on MTV’s Sucker Free countdown, he had no label or publicist- Tabi Bonney was truly an
independent artist standing on his own. With his new sound gaining momentum, Tabi gathered his influences
from the land of Togo and introduced the land Go-Go to his sound by keeping his singles in strong rotation
on local Washington, DC radio stations.
Since his early beginnings, Tabi Bonney has moved forward with his music and started to reach out to other
artistic genres such as production, film and fashion. He has directed two videos off of his debut album,
created his own production company “Cool Kids Forever Films” and launched his clothing line “Bonney Runway”
clothing, which is being sold in boutiques in NY, LA, DC, Miami and London. His singles to watch out for
include, “Nuthin’ but a Hero”, “The Stars”, “Fever” featuring Raheem DeVaughn and “Killer People” featuring Wale.
