Sean John Combs is better known as Diddy today but has previously gone through several other stage names. He was originally called Puff Daddy then he became P. Diddy. In August of 2005 he decided to drop the first half of his name completely and because Diddy as he is now called. Diddy is an American rapper who is also an actor and a men’s fashion designer. He was born on November 4, 1969 in the projects of Harlem, New York. His mother was named Janice and was a model and teacher and his father was Melvin Earl Combs. Sean Combs grew up in Mount Vernon, New York. His father Melvin died when he was a child as he was shot in his car in the Manhattan park. The young Sean Combs played football at Mount Saint Michael Academy and graduated from the Roman Catholic school in 1987. He got his nickname “Puff Daddy” as a child because people said he huffed and puffed when he got upset.

Sean “Puffy” Combs then went on the college at Howard University in Washington, DC. He later got an intern at Uptown Records in New York. He eventually dropped out of Howard University when he became the top executive at Uptown Records. He then began developing Jodeci instrumentally and produced Mary J. Blige. In 1993 Sean Combs was fired from Uptown Records and this is when founded Bad Boy Records and he took the Notorious B.I.G. along for the ride. After the Notorious B.I.G. and Craig Mack began making hits and successful albums Combs began signing more artists to the label.

In 1997 Combs recorded his first vocals under the alias “Puff Daddy”. “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” was his first single and it was at number one on the Billboard charts for six weeks. In 1998 his debut album won a Grammy and was a number one album as well. “I’ll Be Missing You” was another one of Puff Daddy’s hit singles which as written in memory of the Notorious B.I.G. after his death.

In 1999 Puff Daddy began to get in trouble with the law. Puff Daddy was dating Jennifer Lopez and one night they were at a nightclub when gun shots were fired. Puff Daddy was arrested along with rapper Shyne weapons violations and other charges. However, later in 2001 Combs was acquitted and he changed his stage name from Puff Daddy to P.Diddy. In 2002 Combs started is reality show on MTV called “Making the Band”. On this show contestants competed to form a new group on Bad Boy records. The show was very successful and had several sequels however the bands produced from the competition did not see the same success.

In 2005, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs appeared on the Today Show, and revealed that he would be changing his stage name yet again. He dropped the “P” and he is now known as just “Diddy”. Today Diddy has ventured into other areas of business and has become successful in the fashion industry. Diddy is reportedly raking in around $500 million a year from his urban men’s clothing line Sea Jean. Sean Combs is said to be one of the richest men in the music and entertainment business today.
