Kenny Irby, a senior faculty member at the Poynter Institute may want to downgrade his
career role. Not only that, the boisterous 'official' needs to have his opinion downgraded
in terms of public value. After making claims that Trayvon Martin's gold teeth are part of a
"Bad Boy" image in Hip Hop culture, it's obvious he has no clue sometimes to what he speaks of.
"The [ gold ] grill," Kenny Irby says, referring to the removable trendy dental jewelry
popularized by today's popular culture, "is fundamentally a part of that bad boy image."
Worn by Trayvon Martin in a photo, freshly circulated by press and blogs, Irby is trying to
help convince the public the jewelry is a sign of a menacing person. However, apparently the
"senior" faculty member, has not involved in the culture he speaks of enough to have a
valid opinion or open his mouth with truth.
"A gold grill is not a sign of a thug." says Rodrick Rainey, founder of the web's first
Hip Hop fashion blog, Sojones.com "There are Central Americans with Gold Grills in their 40's.
In the South, people wear grills to cover bad teeth in a flashier way.
Justin Bieber has a gold Grill. These are not thugs, so
why is Trayvon Martin? I belive people are letting their age and personal racial hatreds be seen, clearly".
Indeed the Gold Grill has been worn by artists P.Diddy, Kanye West, and even Justin Bieber.
Hardly the 'thug' or ironically 'Bad Boy' artists Kenny Irby portrays everyone with a
gold grill as. Hhis senior status does not seem to hold value in all markets with such
inaccurate analysis of Hip Hop, the new pop culture, image.
According to Rainey, the gold grill, is just a sign of wealth to youth. Trayvon Martin,
like many fans of West and Bieber, simply wore his Gold Grill being a part of the normal,
American teenage crowd. The 17 year old student athletejust wanted to feel recognized
for having material wealth, like many kids his age. Signs of status are jewelry,
new clothes, a new car, and other material goods.
While still under investigation, the Trayvon Martin murder is still recieving multiple views as
different public figures use the case as tool to gain instant fame. Making comments with
marketing 'shock value'to boost their name into the media spotlight, readers can only wonder
how Karma effects those speaking with hatred, along with their close family.
