The first Andy Warhol self-portrait was a four-panel acrylic silk-screen. It was created between
1963 and 1964. Putting a 'jolt' into spring art sales, the Andy Warhol first, sold for a whopping
$38.44 million.
"Andy Warhol's artwork redefined art from his period. Even the artists he associated with,
such as Jean Basquiat, did the same. To sell for $38 million, it goes to show how much Warhol's
creativity influenced and excited the world," spoke new music sensation, C.KHiD.
The first Andy Warhol self-portrait was sold by family of Detroit collector Florence Barron.
Nearly 50 years ago, Barron purchased the Warhol artwork for $1,600. Excited by
the original artwork, the Detroit collector would not let the Warhol piece pass, buying it
on a payment plan.
The final selling price of Warhol's first self-portrait was the results of a heated bidding war.
Over 15 minutes of bidding between two determined art collectors led to a final price
of $38.44 million.
"I really believe my mother-in-law would have been ecstatic," Nora Barron told Reuters after the sale.
"She loved the picture, she loved Andy and I truly believe she would have loved tonight."
$38.44 million was the highest sales price ever paid for an Andy Warhol portrait. The sale also
helped Christie's senior international director, Laura Paulson, determine art sales are still
possible during a weak economy.
